Successful Book Sale

Submitted to the Great Bend Tribune the week of October 28th by Mary Ann June, Friends' Treasurer:

Successful Book Sale

"Successful" is defined as “turning out to be as was hoped for.” This year the Book Sale went beyond what was hoped for, thanks to many volunteers. The Friends of the Library officers have many people to thank: the folks from CPI who moved a mountain of books, Boy Scout Troop #184 from Trinity Lutheran Church for making sign holders, the Friends of the Library Volunteers who sorted books all year long, maintenance staff at the library, City workers, Sunflower Diversified, the Barton County Basketball coach and team for moving books after the sale. Cooperation is what helps us continue this great project.
All of the volunteers along with superb publicity from The Tribune, Eagle Radio, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, KSN and the City of Great Bend helped tremendously. Our appreciation goes especially to all who attended the sale and for your continued involvement in the library.

National Library Week 2012

Thanks to the work of a committee headed up by Mary Lou Warren, the Friends are doing several things at the library for National Library Week (April 8th - 14th).  All week the library will have a large Appreciation Card displayed for the public to sign - created and sponsored by the Friends.  Tuesday we will be providing the staff of both Great Bend Public Library and Central Kansas Library System with lunch.  The library staff will also be handing out lollipops on Tuesday - most are a donation from the Friends.  On Wednesday we are having a Friends' Community Coffee Day - serving coffee and cookies to the public from 10 am - 2 pm.  We are also giving a small appreciation gift to the staff on Friday.  We hope many of our Friends' members will help us make it a GREAT National Library Week at Great Bend Public Library!

2012 Annual Membership Meeting

Don't forget to join us for the Annual Membership Meeting Sunday, April 1st @ 2 pm in the library's lower level meeting room!
FEBRUARY UPDATE:

The group met Sunday, February 5th and discussed several things, the first event on the Friends line up is serving coffee to the public Valentine’s morning, that’s Tuesday, February 14th.  If you are free and would like to help or if you would like a cup of coffee come to the library from 10 am – Noon.  The library is having an all-day Romance Movie Marathon with the first movie starting right at 10 am.  So you can grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the morning movie.

There was also discussion about what the Friends could do for National Library Week, the week of April 8th.  Mary Lou Warren is heading up a small committee to make plans.  Some ideas thrown out were hosting a book talk/author book talk, serving coffee to the public, staff appreciation…would you like to help make plans for this event?  Mary Lou will be meeting with those interested Friday, February 17th to start the planning.  Call/email Cara (gbplfriends@gmail.com), Friends' Library Liaison, to learn more.

There was also discussion about doing a Friends' fundraiser later in the year.  Chris Rippel is very enthusiastic about doing a catered dinner/murder mystery event in the library.  Do you love attending/planning events like this?  Do you have acting skills we could call on?  If you would like to help Chris get a committee together to try and put a fun event like this together let Cara know so she can get you his contact information.  We even had a great suggestion of having a fundraising contest to determine who we would “kill in the stacks” for the event.

The Bookstore is doing VERY well!  Thanks to those volunteers keeping it full/materials rotated.  Thanks to those that have bought books.  Have you been in to shop the shelves?  Stop by, the prices are GREAT – ranging from $1 - $3!

The Friends also voted to give money to the Children’s, Young Adult, and Adult Summer Reading Programs.  The staff are VERY GRATEFUL to have this gift!!  It will add to the fun they can have this summer!

The Friends will be meeting again Sunday, March 4th @ 2 pm to finalize the National Library Week plans.  Thanks for all that you do to support the Great Bend Public Library.  It is wonderful to have such GREAT Friends!

February 2012 "LOVE YOUR LIBRARY"

Did the groundhog see his shadow? Punxsutawney Phil did indeed see his shadow on Groundhog Day, February 2, 2012. Many people who were waiting for Phil's prediction from Gobbler's Knob were disappointed to learn that there may be six more weeks of winter.

I looked out my window this morning to see if the sun was shining enough for a groundhog to see his shadow and I’m happy to report I don’t think he could so maybe we are in for a mild, short winter.  A good rain would bring spring flowers!

February is also the month for love and caring, making it a great month to join Friends and show your love for the library. It’s also a good time if you are a member of Friends and are looking for a great gift for a friend for Valentine’s Day! Visit the library and buy them a membership or a used book to read. Treat yourself to a good read!

The Bookstore is open during regular library hours. Hardback books sell for $3.00, paperbacks $1.00, DVD-VHS $1.00.

Single memberships are $10.00 and a family can join for $20.00.

Activities are being planned, your help is needed!!  See you at the library!
