Saturday, November 26th - HELP NEEDED!

Just a few reminders of ways you can get involved to support the library and FRIENDS Saturday, November 26th!

    Holiday Parade:
You are invited to walk with the Central Kansas Library System Rotating Truck and hand out candy.  The truck will have a nice sign saying “Great Bend Public Library & Friends.” So, all will know you are with us J!  If you would like to be a part of this:
Gather at the Water Park parking lot (entering the parking lot from Williams street – they recommend carpooling if you can) no later than 5:15 pm– the truck will be there soon after 4:15 pm. The parade starts at 5:30 pm.  Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

    After Hours @ GBPL:
The library is staying open until 8:30 pm Saturday night, joining the other downtown businesses in a late evening.  Eric Coulbourne, Children’s Librarian, will be providing a story and craft time with Jennifer King, YA/Marketing Librarian coordinating the playing of a short Christmas classic movie.  The Friends gave money and voted to give time to this event.  Your help is needed in serving refreshments or helping with the story and craft time.  Interested?  Either skip the parade and join Eric @ 5 pm or come following the parade and warm yourself up!

    Friends’ Book Store Grand Opening:
Members Chris & Kathy Rippel have been working hard to get the gently used Book Store ready for its grand opening (scheduled for 6 pm – aka following the parade).  They have wrapped the shelves like a big present which will be opened and revealed Saturday night (it looks really GREAT!).  So…come be a part of this exciting event!

Your volunteer time and energy are much appreciated!

Friends Opening Year Round "Book Store"

Join member Chris Rippel Wednesday, November 16th @ 7 pm in the Kansas Room to discuss getting a year round Book Store started.  He needs your help!  We have the books and we have a place to shelve them - we just need the committee to work on how to get it organized and the steps to keep it running smoothly.  If you cannot make it to the meeting but would like to help please contact Chris directly @ crippel@ckls.org.

The store is advertised to open during the "After Hours" event at the library on Saturday, November 26th!

Library book sale was a winner!

Well written Mary Ann!  This is from page 4 of the Tuesday, October 25, 2011 Great Bend Tribune:

    Dear Editor,
Thank you to all who volunteered at the Great Bend Public Library book sale.
The time and energy you gave for the sale will ultimately support the library.
Volunteers from CPI transported several tons of boxes onto tables for the sale and then came and moved them out.
Friends of the Library members sorted books all year long and worked during the sale.
Sunflower Diversified, Great Bend Public Library teen group, library staff, our maintenance person, the Great Bend Tribune, Eagle Radio, and the city of Great Bend also helped.
    We appreciate all!
And a huge thanks goes to everyone who came to the sale and for bringing book donations all year to the library.
To support our public library benefits people of all ages, from very young children, to teens, to adults.
The Friends of the Library thanks you for making this a winning event and are now looking forward to next year’s sale.
    Mary Ann June,
    Friends of the Library,
    Great Bend

Don’t forget we need your help with Zoo Boo this Saturday, October 29th!  If you are interested in helping please contact Eric Coulbourne, Children’s Librarian, directly @ ecoulbourne@ckls.org or 792-2409.

Hope to see many of you at the Sunday, November 6th meeting!  That’s the day of the time change, so be sure and set your clocks to get an extra hour of sleep!

    Book Sale

Would you like to help with the Book Sale?  We need Friends to help beginning in early October!  Contact Cara Negaard, 792-2409, if you are interested!

    Annual Book Sale Date Set!

The Friends of Great Bend Public Library decided at the August meeting to have the Annual Book Sale during National Friends of the Library week in October.  The sale is set to begin on Sunday, October 16th!  Members of the Friends group are invited to shop on the first day, with the public sale beginning on Monday, October 17th!  This means the Friends will really need volunteers to sort books - please stop in and help out!  Contact Cara Negaard, Friends Library Liaison - 792-2409, to find out how you can help!

The Friends also voted to help support upcoming library programming.  They are giving money and volunteer time to the library for Zoo Boo in October (date to be set by the Great Bend Zoo), the Holiday Parade After Hours event November 26th, and the December Story Time Program (date not set - usually mid-December).  Do these sound like fun events you would like to help with?  Let us know!  Or at least make a note in your calendars!!

We hope to see you in the library soon!!

    Book Sale Help Needed

As of the Friends meeting on Saturday, June 4th, the annual book sale held at the Great Bend Public Library is in the hands of the Friends!  We are in need of Friends volunteers to come and sort and box books for the sale.  Sorting and boxing the book is a process that goes on year round so we are in need of volunteers NOW!  Giving your time and energy to this project also lets you see what books will be showing up in the book sale.  It's easy to join Friends and be a part of this great project!  You can contact library staff member Cara Negaard, library liaison to Friends, to find out how you can help!

    NEW Meeting DATE & TIME!

    Saturday, June 4th @ 10 am

The June meeting will be a program devoted to a behind the scenes look at the book sale.  On Saturday, June 4 at 10 am a trip to the basement archives of donated and weeded books will be conducted by Cara Negaard and Jerri Collins, members of the library staff. They will give instructions and demonstrations on how volunteer members of the Friends can help with the sale from beginning to end. Volunteers are needed now to see that this year's book sale is a success! Members of the community can help by contributing books all through the year.

Have you renewed your membership?  It is only $10 per individual to be a member of Friends and membership runs April - March.  Don't miss out on any opportunities to help support the library!

The meeting has moved from the previously announced Sunday date and time due to the library changing business hours during the summer.  We are excited to be offering more morning hours!  Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the library will have the following hours:

    Mon - Wed:  8:30 am - 6 pm
    Thu:  8:30 am - 8 pm
    Fri - Sat: 9 am - 5 pm
    Sun: Closed

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, June 4th @ 10 am!

    Meeting Sunday, February 6, 2011 @ 2 p.m. in the library's Kansas Room.
