November Art Show "Selected Art" by Rick Peters

Selected Art by Rick Peter, Great Bend, will be on display through the month of November in the Fine Arts Room at the Great Bend Public Library.
According to Rick, “In past years, much of my painting addressed memories of family and events during his childhood.  These paintings were not direct observations. They often came-off as "riddles" or ambiguous "snap shots." Some of these works explored my mother's struggles with physical and mental health, my father's dedication to accountability in all things and his boyhood observations.   I also explore "take-offs" of carnival sideshow banners. The banner format has recently made its way into my imaginary landscape painting experiments. Other recent (small) paintings take "snippets" of imagery from Sublime and Romantic landscape painting. The added human element suggests the effects of the passing of time, a "crossing over."

Books Books And More Books

This year the library had more than 6,000 books to sell at our Annual Used Book Sale. For the first time we held two sales. The first sale was October 2-5. We sold children's books, cassettes, and videos. We closed October 6-7 and added the adult books. Friends of the Library were invited to shop first at both sales on Friday October 1 and Friday October 8. The sale ended with a huge "buy a box for a donation" sale. The sale would not have happened without all our FRIENDS and volunteers.

October Art Display

Rebecca Drach is Artist of the Month of October 2010
Painting in oils fascinates Rebecca. She paints using the Direct Method otherwise known as "Alla Prima", all at once. Using this method the paint is applied to the canvas in a single layer, usually in one setting. Her work is regularly represented at the Barton Arts Center in Great Bend and the Hutchinson Arts Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. Rebecca lives in Saint John, Kansas. September Art Show

"Faces of Art" by Terri Horner will be featured in the Fine Arts Room during the month of September.

“Art is such an integral part of life. Through art we see the beautiful and the ugly of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we hope we may arrive. Art is life’s portrait. My vision tends to center around my two favorite things; people and nature. I often partner with Mother Nature and love to uncover what she has hidden away inside a piece of wood or stone. I am excited to share my ideas with you through the Great Bend Public Library’s gallery. I hope you enjoy my work and discover a new idea or concept as you explore the show. I would also like to extend thanks and appreciation to my friends and supporters who think of me often when they discover and share Mother Natures masterpieces.”

Sincerely,
Terri Horner

Children's Summer Program

The 2010 Children’s Summer Reading Club Make a Splash! Read! was a great success. We had 304 children sign up this year 202, read at least one book and 127 met their goal. The programs were very well attended ranging from thirty to sixty two children for each program. The children really enjoyed putting a fish with their name on it on the wall for every book that they read. The staff was very busy cutting out all of the fish and the Children’s Room looked great covered in fish! We can’t wait for next year’s program!

Summer Teen Program

The Teen Summer Program was a huge success. Twenty-five programs were held. Teens read 110 books with a total of 33,731 pages. Included in the group was a teen from St. Louis.
I sent out a survey at the end of the program and was pleased with the responses. Many commented about the new friends they made. Some were excited about the “There ain't no fish bait here” cooking day (Added new this year). One suggested they choose the foods to cook. We made homemade ice cream, muffins, pizza, waffle people with bacon (I was surprised how many teens had never cooked bacon) and other goodies. We celebrated birthdays and even held an unbirthday for those whose birthdays were not during the program.
We have some GREAT teens in our program. I hope the FRIENDS will have opportunities to work with them.
